Consider a universe in which everyone may be anyone, where reality and fiction blend effortlessly, and the truth is reduced to a simple illusion. Deep fakes, the technology that allows for the creation and manipulation of very realistic synthetic media, have the potential to transform this fantasy into a horrific reality. Surprisingly, deep fakes are expected to generate nearly 1,250,000 FAKE VIDEOS online by 2024. This frightening statistic should act as a wake-up message to the enormous threats posed by deep fake technologies.
Let's understand how deep fakes are changing the world not for the better, what we've imagined but rather making it much.... much, worse than your worst nightmare.
THE NAIVE EVOLUTION:
Deep fakes began innocently in the entertainment sector, with early efforts playfully switching actors' faces in classic films, most notably Nicolas Cage's. However, as AI and machine learning advanced, deep fakes took a darker turn, posing severe challenges to numerous parts of society.
In politics and world affairs, hostile actors used deep fakes to spread disinformation and deceive the public, weakening trust in media and institutions. Furthermore, fraudsters used this technology in social engineering attacks, impersonating high-ranking authorities or executives in order to get access to sensitive information or manipulate individuals.
In response to these troubling developments, experts and technology businesses have been working feverishly to improve detection systems for identifying and flagging modified information. The scope of the deep fake challenge is mind-boggling, with the number of deep fake videos on the internet growing at an exponential rate. According to DeepTrace, a business that specializes in deep fake detection, the number of deep fake movies online more than doubled from 7,964 in December 2021 to 16,544 in September 2022. This rapid spread emphasizes the importance of developing efficient detection solutions.
Governments throughout the world have acknowledged the gravity of the issue and are drafting laws to prohibit the malicious use of deep fakes, inflicting harsh penalties on those who violate the law. Several states in the United States have already established legislation addressing deep fakes, with penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment. For example, in 2022, California enacted legislation that sanctions up to three years in prison and fines of up to $10,000 for manufacturing or distributing deep fakes with the intent to deceive or defraud.
Deep fakes have an impact that extends beyond politics and security. These complex products have also had an impact on public trust and media credibility. Deep fakes can damage trust in institutions and leaders with a few mouse clicks. As society deals with the consequences, it becomes clear that solutions will require a collective effort combining specialists, technologists, and individuals.
THE GLOBAL EFFORTS:
It's not just the United States that is working hard to meet the difficulties posed by this powerful technology. Other countries have also taken strong steps to control and limit the dangers of synthetic media.
Not so surprisingly, China is leading the assault, a country famed for its technology breakthroughs and strict commitment to government. China took preventive measures as early as 2019, establishing regulations on deep fake technology to limit potential exploitation. Creators must now expressly mark their content as synthetic in order to ensure transparency and responsibility. Recognizing the threat that deep fakes pose to democratic processes, China has outright prohibited their use in any kind of electoral activity, ensuring the integrity of their political environment.
Meanwhile, in India, the government has taken a different strategy to combat the deep fake issue. Recognizing the importance of staying one step ahead of hostile actors, India has made major investments in research and development to fight the malicious use of deep fakes. India is working hard to enhance its defences against this tremendous threat, armed with innovative technology solutions and a determination to protect their community from disinformation operations. But yet, we are not making any laws regarding this horrendous act.
Curiosity abounds as we stare into the horizon of deep fake regulation. How will the globe unite in this digital war for truth and authenticity? Can countries band together to forge a cohesive front against this global threat? As countries attempt to form international cooperation to solve the cross-border difficulties of synthetic media, the fight to combat deep fake abuse has become a test of not just technological prowess but also political finesse.
Recently President Biden, and the US Government, made it compulsory for AI-generated content to be flagged as AI-generated so that normal people like us can understand consciously, what is real (Human-generated) and what is fabricated (AI-Generated) which is a step in the positive direction.
DEEP FAKE HORRORS:
The exploitation of naïve victims for non-consensual deep fake pornography is one of the most disturbing and morally repugnant aspects of deep fakes. The porn industry's blatant adoption of this technology has ushered in a dark era of violation, in which individuals are unknowingly propelled into the most private corners of the internet. The consequences of such an invasion of privacy are devastating, leaving individuals devastated and their sense of dignity and agency broken. The scars are deep, haunting every area of their lives and causing them to suffer from long-term emotional distress.
According to a survey by the cybersecurity firm Sensity, the number of deep fake porn movies online has risen to over 134,000 by 2021, demonstrating the frightening magnitude of this violation of privacy and the enormous difficulty it poses to individuals and society at large. And the horrifying truth is that 70 % of this is not of celebrities but of normal, simple, everyday girl women using their faces as a medium from social media. These girls and women don't even know that their faces are being used as bait until they do.
The consequences of deep fakes go beyond the public realm, permeating the fundamental fabric of personal relationships and trust. With technology growing at unforeseen speeds, distinguishing between real and fake content becomes a difficult chore, leaving people doubting the authenticity of the very memories they cherish. In recent times, the kendrick lamar deep fake video shows how this technology has evolved beyond a normal individual face recognition capacity. This begs us the question, can we trust anything present on the internet anymore? Scepticism and doubt are infiltrating the core of interpersonal interactions, threatening the trust that serves as the foundation of human ties.
The dangers of deep fakes cannot be underestimated. Their potential to deceive, manipulate, and sow discord gravely threatens individuals, societies, and even national security. It is crucial that swift action is taken to regulate the use and creation of deep fakes. Governments, technology companies, and individuals alike must come together to implement strict regulations, develop advanced detection tools, and continue to raise awareness about the dangers of deep fakes.
MAY POSITIVE HOPE:
The strength of information and alertness becomes our guiding beacon in the midst of this digital storm. In our pursuit of truth, authenticity, and human dignity, let us be interested, informed, and united. In this struggle against the nefarious forces of deep fakes, we must be unrelenting in our commitment to preserving our society's integrity and defending the very essence of what makes us human.
As we move on into the unknown, may our pursuit be fuelled not just by a determination to overcome this task, but also by an unwavering faith in humanity's tenacious spirit. While the deep fake environment is complex, it is also a battleground for hope, creativity, and resilience. In the face of this astonishing digital revolution, we may emerge victorious by safeguarding the truth, keeping trust, and preserving the spirit of our shared humanity.
